SWIMMING.

A meeting of the committee of the Lancaster Park -Swimming Club was held on Friday; present—Messrs R. O. Duncan, vicepresident (in the chair), W. H. Bergh, P. D. Stokes, N. -M'Dov/ell, D. Steirunetz, C. Watts, R. Dockery, P. Newton and M. T. Wheeler. Twelve new members. were elected, making eighty for the season, and the programme for the annual -sports in February was drafted. It was decided to procure a water polo ball and arrange water polo matches with other clubs. A race in connection with the Lancaster Park 'Swimming Club was swum 'last week, and resulted as follows: heat: J. M'Kiriley, 12sec, 1. R. Dockery, 7se,c, F. Hildyard 12sec and J. 'Moore 12sec also started. Time—4s 3-ssec. Second heat: A. Jack, lOsec, 1. N. M'-Dowell ssec, D. -M'Kinley 15sec and J. 'Stevens 22sec also started. Time—44 l-ssec. Third heat: H. Goodv/in, lFsec, 1. G-. Bullock ISsec .and G. Deighton 13seo also started. Time—s2sec. Fourth heat: P. Newton, scr, 1. C. Hadiiield 12-seo and N. Sturrock 19sec also started. Time—36 2-ssec. Fifth heat: J. Jack, 9sec, 1. P. D. .Stokes Isec, A. Robbie 9sec arid H. Denby 13sec also started. Time -44 sec. Sixth heat: S. Poore, 13sec, 1. J. Brice 19sec andj T. Clarkson 22sec also started. Time—sosec. Final: H. Goodwin, losec, 1; J. M'Kinley, 12sec, 2. S. Poore, F. Newton and J. Jack also started. Time—4ssec.

Mr -M. J. Champion, the winner of all tho New Zealand championships, will endeavour to break 'the record for the 440yds at Lancaster Park bath this afternoon. Champion,' who has made great progress in his swimming lately, won tho 440yds .at Lyttelton on New Year's Day'in 6min 30sec, beating Percy Cavill's time, 6mini 33sec, in the same race two years ago. Champion will this afternoon endeavour to break 6mdn 24 2-ssec, the New Zealand record, made by W. J. Gormley at Auckland in February, 1894. Tho New South Wales record is 6min 3, 2-ssec, while, J. H. Tyers holds the world's record of Smin 43 1-gsec. Champion, in his endeavour this afternoon, will bo paced by the best of our local men. A 50yds Handicap, post entries, will also be decided, 'this afternoon. Tho Australasian championships take place in Melbourne this year, -starting- on Feb. 2 next, and- Champion will represent New Zealand there.' Next year Christ-nurch' will again have the honour of holding this great gathering. A very fine group of ''Maoriland's fastest swimmers," Malcolm Champion, J. M. Hamilton and G. Tyler, is reproduced in the current number of the New Zealand "Sportsman," which also contains additional comments concerning the recent championships. A number of first-class snapshots taken at the. -Sydenham's Club's recent carnival are also shown.
