SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

- The ' monthly meeting of ' the Kaiapoi Borough School Committee' was held on Monday evening; -present—Messrs Moore (chairman), FeMwick, Ccup, Young, Drakeley, Boubleday,_ Ellen and Clark. ' Correspondence' was read from. the Board of -Education, advocating the training of the,. children in the fire'alarm system. The matter was, referred to the Visiting Committee, "to ' report, at the next meeting. Miss Irene Moore was recommended for appointment' as'a- pupil-teacher. An 'application for several 'requirements by the caretaker .was referred- to the Visitby the caretaker was referred' to the. Visiting -.Commiittee, with power to act. Accounts to the amount of £3 6s 2d were passed for payment. A meeting of the Ashley School Committee was held on Monday, Jan. 7; present —Messrs Whiteside, Duffell, Willis, Collie and Jolly. It was decided that the holidays should extend over six weeks. The work of the following scholars, who sent sewing ,to the Exhibition, was commended:—Edith Dick, Lily Dick, Jane Banks, Eva Duffell, Maud Davidson and Fanny Barriek, . The monthly meeting of the Belfast School Committee was held on Monday evening; present Messrs Thompson (chairman), . O'Callaghan, Watson, Wotton and Morgan. It was decided to give a concert on Friday evening, Feb. 1, a,nd to hold the annual picnic at Sumner on.the Friday following. Messrs Morgan and O'Callaghan were ' appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. - A meeting of the Loburn School Committee was held on Jan. 5; present—Messrs Joynt (chairman), Hodgson, Blackett and Carr. A communication was read from the Board of enclosing a copy of a letter received from " A Mother," who complained that pigs, horse, cow, ducks and and fowls were kept amongst the children in the school grounds. It was decided to reply, contradicting the statement, and expressing surprise that the Board should so far ackno%vledge an anonymous letter. In reply to the committee's letter, asking for half the cost of the wooden fence at the bottom of the school grounds, the ■ Board pointed out that the expenditure was unauthorised, and that in any case the adjoining owner should pay his share. It was decided, to reply, stating that the adjoininoowner maintains a similar length of fence adjoining this one,.and that this was am exceptional fence put up entirely for the benefit of'the children.
