TEACHERS SALARIES.

THE EXTRA CAPITATION GRANT. MR T. S. WESTON'S OPINIONS. At the meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education yesterday a letter was read from the Education Department in regard to the distribution of the item .voted last session—" Addition to statutory oapitation, teachers' salaries only, as directed by the Minister of Education, £8250," and stating that the list of teachers and salaries forwarded by the Board 'showed that those whose names appeared on an accompanying list were in receipt of salaries that, in the opinion of the Government, were below what should .be, paid upon a uniform scale to teachers 'holding the positions nearly corresponding • to 1 : the actual positions of the teachers named. The amounts necessary to bring those salaries up to such a scale were indicated opposite the names of the teachers affected. The total of all such increases for North Canterbury was £919 10s 7d. The Minister was, however, aware that the systems of staffing varied in the several education districts and that therefore in some cases a scale of salaries drawn up on the basis of a uniform system of staffing might act unequally in the different districts. Mr T. S. Weiston, Chairman of the Board, said in reference to the table.pre-, pared that a large.number of poorly-paid' teachers would not participate in the distribution, and the Board would have; grounds for taking very grave exception to' the charges proposed. In the manufacturing of a scale of salaries the authorities in Wellington should be acquainted with the 1 ordinary and extra duties -of teachers. If the Board accepted the proposal ; t'o. consult'! with the Department l it would Jbe^said to' have accepted the proposed Vcale.;?' Hei thought the Board should, draw" upl an ;ex-j hausstjve memo for the Weffinj|ton autho-.j rities setting forth the Board's opinions. : The Board should form itself'into"a comr. mittee to consider the table,;'as it, was impossible to go into it carefully at the ordinary meeting. It was decided that the Board should meet - on Friday, Jan. 25, to consider the table of the capitation grant.
