THE SOUTH BELT SCHOOL.

DEPUTATION TO THE EDUCATION BOARD. , A,deputation, consisting,of (Messrs J. R. Brant, D. Lumsden and G. H. Henry, waited upon' the North 'Canterbury Education Board yesterday, in reference to . the request that the. South Belt School should be re-opened. The deputation placed a considerable amount of evidence before the Board relative to the numbers of children in the neighbburhooa of the South Belt School, stating that after a somewhat imperfect canvass, of the district, bounded by Cas'hel Street, East and South Belts and Manchester Street, the numbers of childipen had been set down at 28, five years old; 40, "six years old; 18, seven years old; 8, eight years old; and 1 nine years old, giving a total of 95. The children four years of age and Tinder numbered 59, and those in Standards I. and 11. totalled 51, giving a total of 110, which, with the 95 in the first return, would give a grand total of 205. The Chairman pointed out that while the deputation had included a number of prospective students, they had not allowed for children who would 'be leaving the school. Mr Lulnsden said that the number leaving would be made up by others coming. The deputation having thanked, the Board, then withdrew. Mr. Rennie moved that the question 'of re-opening the South Belt School should be referred to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report. Mr Buddo thought the Board should deal with the matter, as it was entailing much work on the Appointments Committee, and that committee had alreadv gone into the matter. Mr Hardy, in seconding the .motion-, said he thought it only right the Appointments Committee should reconsider the question, as a lot of fresh.. evidence had been placed before the Board. The motion, on being put, was carried.
