Messrs E. G. Kerr, of L he "Timaru Herald," W. D. Campbell, of the Timaru "Morning Post," and A. S. Paterson, of Dunedin, were passengers for the *outh by the express train yesterday. It is reported (says the "Napier Telegraph") that Mr W. L. Rees, the wellknown lawyer, at one time an Auckland City- representative in the Lower House, ha& been suggested by the Gisborne Liberal Association as a representative of Poverty Bay in the Legislative Council. Colonel Peart, of the Salvation Army, Chief' Secretary for Australasia, arrived an Wellington on Friday on a flying visit' >fco the local corps.; ; The Minister of Lands will leave Wellington next week on a tour of the agricultural districts in the North Bland. The Major Steward, who was present at the Australian Commonwealth, inauguration ceremonies at Sydney, is a passenger by the Talune, which arrived at Auckland yesterday. Dr O'Neill, Resident Surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, was yesterday presented by the medical staff of the institution with a valuable field gla>ss, prior to his departure for South Africa as assistant surgeon of the Sixth Contingent. Mp Orlando Daly, who toured New Zealand with Mr Walter Bentley recently, is now in South Africa, and has received a commission, as senior lieutenant in the bodyguard of the Commander-in-Chief, Lord Kitchener. Mr Daly, before taking to the stagey held a commission under General Owen in the Queensland Defence Force. Mr N. Ellis, of the Riccarton, Road Board, who has been confined to bed for some time, j is gradually improving in health. j
