ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

[Pee Peess Association.] WANGANUI, Jan. 14. A' well-known resident, Mr George Devenport, died suddenly on Sunday afternoon. With Ms wife and cnild he went to Kai-iwi, a few miles away, for a day's outing. When the time came to return ; Devenport complained of feeling unwell, laid down and shortly expired. At the inquest a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. CARRIAGE ACCIDENT IN CATHEDRAL SQUARE. A PLUCKY- DRIVER. About a quarter to,three yesterday afternoon, as Mi- and Mrs Meredith-Kaye were being driven in a carriage through Cathedral Square, one of the horses took fright at the Papanui steam train and commenced plunging about. While the driven was endeavouring to pacify the animal and it was struggling to get away, the carriage came into collision with one of the cabs on the yank in front of the Cathedral, with the result that the pole-head of the carriage broke, letting the point of the pole down on the ground. This sudden check terrified the frightened (horse, and it attempted to bolt. The driver, however, pluckiiy stuck to the reins and held on until some men from the crowd that had quickly gatheredseized the headstall and quietened the horse, but not before it had kicked.the splashboard into pieces. Mrs Kaye was, naturally, much frightened, and was lifted out of the vehicle and taken into the Cathedral, where she soon recovered. The harness was then removed from the horses, and they and the carriage were taken to Haywaid's Rink Stables. But for the coolness _ and pluck of' the driver, a very serious accident might have occurred. Yesterday afternoom, about 5 o'clock, . a little lad named Arnold Rollinson; aged nine years, fell from a tree in the Kaiapoi Domain, while bird-nesting. He was taken to the cottage of Mrs Radclifie, and frorm there to his parents' residence, where Dr Parsons was summoned, and found that the boy had sustained concussion of the brain, but as he had not regained consciousness the full extent of his injuries was not known up to last evening. The Domain Council, at its last meeting, agreed to allow bird-nesting in the Domain.
