PATROL AFFAIRS, DEFENCES FOR CAPETOWN. MOVEMENTS OF THE INVADERS. United 1 Press Association.—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. j LONDON, Jan. 9. A patrol of Western Australians, -while breaking a -wire fence near Richmond, came under a close fire. It skilfully evaded capture.
A patrol of Brabant’s Horse was ambushed at Richmond, and five men were captured, stripped' and released. Amiother patrol of Brabant’s Horse avenged the incident by defeating a Boer patrol, killing the leafier and capturing a number of horses. Jan. 10. Entrenchments are being constructed across the Capo Flats from False Bay to Table Bay. PREPARATIONS FOR DEFENCE., MOVEMENTS OF THE INVADERS. TROOPS FROM EGYPT. LONDON, Jan, 11. Recruiting and! other defensive movemeats in Cape Colony and Natal are astonishingly rapid and) complete. (Received Jan. 12, 12.19 a.m.) The Boers invading the western districts of Cape Colony have divided into two columns, which are advancing on Clanwilliam and Worcester; The British have occupied all the intervening strategical points. All the British soldiers stationed at Cairo who are capable of acting as mounted troops have been warned to 'hold themselves in readiness for despatch to South Aifrica. THE FIGHTING AT NAAUWPOORT. (Received Jan. 12, 12.39 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 11. The Naauwpoort losses were duo to Boers concealed in the grass allowing the Hussars to scout uphill, and only firing when the Imperial Light Horse ascended in close formation. The Light Horse alighted, and responded to the Boer fire briskly, but as they were suffering considerably from the enemy’s fire they were recalled and re-formed, and carried the position by assault. The Boer tactics at Lindley, where Colonel Lang fell, were similar.
