THE JUBILEE MEMORIAL.
Ix is a matter for regret, of -course, that the Jubilee Memorial Committee has been compelled, by lack of funds, to modify its original proposal, but we think 'that, in the circumstances, it has taken the wisest course. We would only urge the executive to make its new scheme complete in itself, and to confine itself entirely to the statue of the Queen. It would be a mistake to keep the memorial in a more or less unfinished condition, in the hope that funds null subsequently •be available to complete the original design. If the money is not forthcoming at present there is small prospect of drawing new subscriptions when the Jubilee excitement has died out. We should complete our memorial of the Jubilee now, and if it is desired to raise a monument to the men who have fallen in South Africa, to commemorate the bravery of the Canterbury troops, or to mark our agricultural and industrial progress, the idea should be carried out on its own account. If the committee has no more than £1000J;o spend, its best plan would be to abandon the original proposal altogether, and to set to work at once on the less elaborate memorial. 1 A statue of the Queen, in some open space, will be quite acceptable to the public, who will hardly care to be constantly reminded, by an unfinished monument, of their failure to accomplish the task they had set themselves. Moreover, the Memorial Committee can hardly be expected to continue its existence indefinitely, and the members will naturally desire their labours to have sqnao finality.
