Mr A. Chalmers, of Lyttelton, has resigned bis . position as a Justice of tbe Peace. His resignation is much regretted in Lyttelton, as his long experience, strong common sense and shrewdness rendered him particularly well fitted to sit on the bench. His resignation increases tbe difficulty often experienced in Port of obtaining a Justice to sit in the Court. Mr Chalmers was always present on his appointed days. , Miss Gardner, who, for a number 'of years, has efficiently filled the position of mistress at the Oust School, has forwarded, her resignation, Having ■ decided to retire from the- scholastic profession. ■ Mr W. H. Gundry, of Christchurch, and Mr W. Brown, of Dunedin, ■ the New Zealand delegates'to the Accountants’ Conference in Sydney, returned by the Mokoia on Wednesday. The Conference passed resolutions affirming the desirability of forming an Australian Institute of Accountants/ and appointing a committee to draw up the constitution, which is to be remitted to the several affiliated institutes for consideration. Another conference is to be held to deal with the reports of the affiliated bodies. Mr W. S. Reid, the retiring SolicitorGeneral, has been presented with a beauti-. fully illuminated address from tbe members of the legal profession practising in Wellington, expressing . appreciation, of. the many eminent services he had rendered the colony during his twenty-five years’ service. The presentation was made by Mr Campbell, President of the Wellington District Law Society. '■ ■ Dr Mason, the Chief Medical Officer of Health, who arrived from Wellington yesterday, intends to leave shortly for the Hammer Springs, upon which he will submit a report to the Government. Drs Findlay and Hamilton and Captain Willis were passengers for Wellington by the s.s. Rotomahana,, which left Lyttelton last night. The Hon T. Y. Duncan, Minister of Lauds, will meet the settlers of Highbank at 11 o’clock on Saturday morning. Mr Duncan is due to arrive at Methven at one o’clock tbe same day. Mr D. D. Hyde, Government Poultry Expert, went south by yesterday’s express train. ,
