POPE AND GOVERNMENT

THE BRITISH PILGRIMS, * - THE DUKE OF NORFOLK’S UTTER-; ances. INDIGNATION IN ITALY. ■ COMMENTS OF THE LONDON PRESS. United Press, Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. ROME, Jan. 9. ...The, Italians are indignant with the j Duke of Norfolk, • who is leading the -Bri--1 tish Roman Catholics’ pilgrimage to Rome, ; for.reading the Pope an address ardently j exnressing the hope of his temporal indeI pendence and attacking the Protestant misI gions in Rome. The Pope re-echoed the sentiments contained in the address in stronger terms. (Received Jan. 11, 1.10 a.xn.) LONDON, Jam. 10. The newspapers are inflamed. They consider that the Duke of Norfolk is abusing Italian hospitality, and that he has incited Italian Catholics to disloyalty. They, are confident that the British Press will disavow his action. The English newspapers, replying, show that Britain for a century has been a supporter of Italian unity. - The “Times’ censures the Duke of Norfolk’s tactless, violation of diplomatic etiquette in 'inviting- Lord Currie, the -British Ambassador, to a reception whereat the healths of .the Queen 'and Pope , were drunk, and King •Victor’s was ostentatiously omitted. The Duke’s going,to South Africa was interpret, ed as the British Catholic reply to the malevolent abuse of Continental clericals towards England, and it was unfortunate that he-sHouldi prejudice his praiseworthy and patriotic action by matt odious religious intolerance and gross tactlessness towards a friendly dynasty and nation.
