Mr •Copeland, the Agent-General for New South Wales, interviewed with reference to Federation, said the colony would need an Agent-General even if a High Commissioner for Australia were appointed.

(Received Jan. 10, 10.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 10. The Cabinet has further considered and decided upon its policy. Mr Barton will disclose it in a speech at Maitland some time next week. He refuses to say anything regarding the tariff beyond a statement that it will satisfy every reasonable man, and that the unreasonable section will be dealt with afterwards. No steps will be taken to replace Sir J. R. Dickson till after the Federal meeting; The Free Trade party is completing arrangements for the elections, and held an organising meeting. The New South Wales Free Trade Liberal Association Iras been established, as the Australian Organisation and Co-operative Committees have been appointed to act in other colonies.
