land, with a cargo or salt, after discharging part of which she comes to Lyttelton to land the balance. The new steamers built by the Oceanic Steamship Company, for the San Francisco mail service, arc the Sierra, Ventura and ’Sonoma, twin-screw 'vessels, built entirely of ■steel, and equipped to pass the United Sca.es Inspection Service. The contract speed of each vessel is not less than seventeen kmns, on a draught of 22it, and a trial of twenty-four hours’ duration at sea. The gross tonnage, is about 6000 torus, and the bunker capacity about 3500 tons. The hull has double bottoms on the cellular system, and there are eight watertight bulkheads. The length of the vessels is 400 ft between perpendiculars, and the beam £o£t. Passengers will be accommodated on the main and lower decks. For first-class paseengers there are eighty stale-rooms. All the first-class accommodation will be forward. Provision is made for eighty second-class passengers "and one hundred steerage passengers. State rooms are provided with berth, and also one transom of the Pullman pattern. TIMARU. The s.s.
