ENTERTAINMENTS.
The anuuiil tea meeting and concert in connection with St John’s Presbyterian Church, Lyttelton*"was held iu the • Oddfellows’ Hall, Winchester Street, on Thursday evening.. . The.tea tables were.presided over by the ladies of the congregation. The concert which followed was well attended, and the chair was occupied by the pastor of the church, .the Rev A. H. Treadwell. Mrs Falla sung ” Dream Voices,” Airs Gilmore “Auld Robin Gray, Aliss 0. Meikle
“Douglas Gordon,” Aliss Livingstone ■" Star of Bethlehem,” Aliss Campbell “ Af-t-on Water” and “Blue Bells of Scotland,” *.j.r G. Flavell “Kings of the Road,” Air G. E. Collins “ The Toilers,” and. Air Empson a comic song (encored). Misses Livingstone and Clarke sang a duet, “me Wind and the Harp.” Airs Bromley was accompanist, and Aliss A. Aleikle, wiih a juvenile pupil, played a pianoforte duet. The ” Acme ”, Banjo Band played two marches, which were encored. Aliss FreeinaTi', recited Tennyson’s ■ “Voyage,’’ and Miss Fodor recited ’“ A Ballad of War.” Mr Whyte gave- a humorous reading, “ A Sair Predicament.” Mr G. Laurenson, M.jl.R., gave a brief address, and at the close of the programme the Chairman heartily thanked all who had taken part in it. A concert was -given in the Bromley school on Friday, Oct. 5, in aid of the school prize and treat fund. Songs were contributed by Alisses E. Lake, E. M. Wilkinson, E. Rodgers, and Messrs D. Town©, Small, W. Thompson, and Wilkinson. Aliss Rodgers gave a capital exhibition of club swinging, and Air D. Ryan was encored for both bis items. Musical selections were given by Aliss J. Rouse and Alasters Rouse and Hopkins, The school children, under the direction of the master, sang several action songs and performed the scarf drill in excellent style. Aliss ».ilkinson acted as accompanist. Votes of thanks -were accorded the performers, and the'master, who ha-d managed the concert and decorated the schoolroom.
There was a large attendance, principally of ladies, at the jumble sale in connection with the New Brighton . Church Building Fund, held at ,St John’s Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. Tha.staUs were stocked with ail sorts of goods, books, clothing', fancy articles and household wares. , A .stall, was devoted to the sale of sweets, and refreshments were provided on tie stage. The stalls were presidedover by lady members of’the New Brighton congregation., , ;■ ■
The annual “social” and concert in connection with St Paul’s, Papamii, was held last evening. At the tea there was a very large attendance, and at the concert a wel come was given to the Rev J. Campbell, who has taken over the work of the Rev H. T. Purchas until the end of the year. Addresses were given by Messrs Campbell and Simpson and the Churchwardens. The concert, which was under the management of Miss Seorell, was a great success. In the Primitive Methodist Church at Linwood on Thursday evening, an interesting and instructive feature was given by the Rev C. E. Ward on “Natural History.” The lecture was listened to attentively, slid was applauded. During the evening songs were given by 3fiss M. Snell, organist. Mr A.v Schumache presided, and there was a fair audience.
