LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD.
. A meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board . was held yesterday;. present— Messrs I. Cibbs (acting-chairman), Pitcaithly, Dnnlopi Rcnnie, M'Clatchie, Brown, Control, Graham, Hay and Laurensoii. Leave of, absence was granted to Messrs E. G. "Wright (chairman)/A. Kaye and F. Waymouth. The" Chairman reported that the .followin<r sum* had been paid in +0 tthe Board's credit:—Wharfage, £1577 10s Id; pilotage and port .charges, £BOO Is 3d;. and -tow-, storage, etc., £345 2s 7dl The amount standing to the credit of No. 1 Account at the Ba,nk of 'New Zealand was £11,303 12s 8d - and the debit balance on No. 2 Account wa.v£?6os 3s. ' The excess of wharfage and piktage 'receipts up to Sept. 30,. 1900, as compared with the corresponding period last year, was £4767 16s id. Alha-rrangemems Wd-been made with the bank to cell for tenders for the second instalment, £lo,ooo, of the 4 per cent dredging lean. • The usual monthly reports on dredging, towing, - storage, an c?' electric light vreve further report from Mr C. Napier-Bell, dated Se--t. 12, in reference to the deposit of dredgings at Camp Bay, was read. Air Napier Bell's report was received. The Harbour Master's report on the depth of th». water at No. 7 jetty was satisfactory, and was received and apnroved. - tin aT>T>licat.lon from Mr Raymond, of the dredge Manchester, for an increase of salary, was referred to the Harbour Improvements Committee. , , v Tlie Chairman recommended that Mi Percy Sowden should be promoted from the position of third to second enoineer, and that Mr D. kellehar should be appointed third engineer their respective salaries to bs £l6 and £l3 per calendar month, and subject to the usual terms of CTirasemen't of the dredge stall. - It-was decided to. grant authority.-to the dredge to'work overtime for. one month, to enable three loads per. dsv to. be. taken ■out" which would'-represent cQOO tons. - -The dredge-master w«.te, stating that one of the dredge fireman had sustained an accident to- his hand, and a claim had .been put in, for half bis. weeklv pay, so the Ocean" Accident Insurance Company. The letter was received. -The Department of Agriculture wrote, a skin o- the Board to re-eonsid-er its decision to charge three-sixteenths of a penny tier 'lb for cool storage of butter, and- to allow a discount of 10 per cent. • _ The acting-Chairman said that the Chairman, Mr Wright, had written to the Department, saying that die Board's letter of Sept. 18 had supplied full particulars. The cool store at Lyttelton was run at el loss, and the Beard could not see'its wav to allow a discount of 10 por cent-. - To this letter the Department had replied, formally accepting the Board's price, and asking that -the rooms for cool storage should be got ready as scon as possible. . - : The Chairman's action was approved. The question of the appointment' of an assistant-pilot, as the pilot, Mr Lswin, had been granted leave of absence for six months, from Nov. 1, was brought up and referred to the Harbour Improvement Committee for consideration and a report. A letter was read from the Marine Department, in reference to. the Asiatics who had been shipped to Sydney. The letter was received. The question of an extension of time for tho 'completion of the tug boiler contractwas allowed to stand oyer until next meeting. A letter was read from the Timarti Harbour Board, offering, a Priestman crane and' bucket for sale. The letter was' received. No.' 1 account, amounting to £1340 12s Id, and No. 2 account*, amounting to £578 9s 4d,' were passed for payment. Mr Gibbs gave notice that, he would move that applications 'should be invited for. the position of assistant-pilot at Lvt-te-Iton, at a. salaryof £240 a. year. .... lur- Connal stated that he: had been in-
formed that the Monowai, in going out of Lyttelton Harbour, drawing' 19ft -forward and 26ft aft, had taken half an hour to; ge$ p outside the moles, having stuck on a bank of mud. A telegram from the Chairman was read, sit'atdng that he was on beard the Monowai when she had stuck on a bank, and he recommended that the approach, to No. 2 Wharf should be dredged. The harbour-master wrote,, stating that the Monowai had been very 'heavily laden, and went out at very low water of a spring tide, but she had not stuck on & mud bank. • Mir M'Olatchie said he thought it was a very exceptional case,. and. that ■ the dredge would be at work on the epofa in due course. No action in the matter was taken. The Board's next, msetim was fixed for Oct. 31.
