MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

>,-,T!he monfcihly meeting of the Swannanca.District -Band of Hope was held in thV schoolroom on Thursday'evening. The Rev 0.-;Porter < (president) occupied the chair. An;, enjoyable programme of songs and recitations was provided bv Misses Winter {2), Atkinson (2), White", Wilkinson, 'Messrs: White (2), Hunt, Flicker, Ernest ;Burt, Jerrey and Polly Wilkinson. Tfle Rev C. Porter gave an interesting address dealing with the degrading effects of alcohol. A;pleasant evening was brought to a close by a. dialogue, "Biddy and the Boarder," in which the- narts were well taken by Misses Winter, White, [Wilkinson, and Messrs White (2) and Winter. During the evening the following motion was passed:—"Thaifc in the opinion of this meeting the proposal to place the Maoris in the King Country. on' the same footing as the rest of the electors with ''regard lo' the licensing question is opposed ■to the highest interests of the Native race." '■ At the Canterbury. College Engineering Society on Saturday -night, Mr "R: William ß read a paper .on the "Manufacture of "a Gold Dredge:" The paper was illustrated by.j numerous drawings, and proved highly instructive.' A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Williams fon his excellent paper. Mr F. Andrews read a paper on motor cars, which was illustrated by models of the.steering gear and "differential" or •" Jack-in-the-Box " driving gear.' /Mr Andrews also gave an interesting account of the motor cars as they appeared when he ■was in England a few. years -ago. A considerable amount of discussion took place, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Andrews for his interesting,paper. The Chairman announced that the next meeting "Would be held on Sept. 8, wlien Mr A. F. Morrison-will read a paper on the " West.dnghouse. Wilkins and D, Maindonald; a duet by Misses M'Fadden; auto harp selections by Miss Ritchie,; recitations'by Misses M. Kruse.'JE. Poison, M. Ca'irns and M. Higham,. and Mr J. Walter, and Masters •T. Hussey and C. Kruse; a violin selec-tion-by Miss Mldred Peel; and two dia- , which caused considerable amusament, . by Misses Grant, E. Gifkins and) L. Douglas, and Messrs Walker (3), J. M'Fadden, L. Wilkins and D. Maindonald. Miss Lucy Barr played the accompaniments. The , usual .monthly meeting of No. x l Maiden City, L.0.L., -was held on Tuesday evening, the W.M., Bro G. F. Straw, presiding. One' candidate was proposed for

membership. The Secretary was instructed 'to 'write for the clearance certificate of a brotha' who wished to join the lodge. He was also instructed to forward letters of sympathy to two families who had suffered through bereavement. The R.W.D.G.M., Bro H. J. The weekly meeting of the Dromore Lite-

tary Society was held on Monday evening, Trhen there was a fair attendance, and a mock elfection took place. Miss Cameron and Messrs Allen and : Kisane . presented, ,4hemselves as candidates for the constituen■i cy, and" gave very interesting addresses, with the leading political topics of ■ the day. An'election was held, the Presif dent (Mr A. C. Maxwell) being the return t|'ing-officer ; The polling resulted in ""the ; return of "MiE-Cameron by iai large majority. On the motion of Mr Allen, seconded by Mr Kisane, the Society, expressed its strong disapproval of the proposed legalising of the sale of intoxicating liquor in the King Country. At the next meeting of the Society, papers will be read by Miss son and Mr J. Wilson.

A meeting of the Waddington Baud of Hope was held on Friday, when there was a good attendance. Mr C. Gamble presided, and the following took part in the pro-

gramme:—-Mesdames Hight and Heighway, Misses M. .Buddy M. Gamble, A. Port and E. Clover,. Messrs Pannett and Budd, and Master L. Ballan and the choir. ' /

The monthly meeting, of the Bangibra Institute Committee was held last evening, when Mr E. B. Good was in the chair. The Treasurer's monthly statement showed that there was a debit balance of £45 5s 6d after paying £BO, balance of contract money for the alterations' to the reading-room. Accounts amounting to £l4 14s were passed for payment.,. It was decided to discontinue subscriptions to the " London Truth" and the " Ludgate Magazine," and to subscribe to "M.A.P." and the "Boyal Magazine" and " Munssy's Magazine." The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Benevolent Lodge, 1.0.0. P., M.U., was held on Monday. There was a large attendance of members, and Bro W. H. Browne, .P.G.,, presided. The sick visitors reported that five members were ill, and tie sick pay due .them was passed for payment. The half-yearly balance-sheet was received. Bro A. Palmer, P.P.G.M., and J. Williamson, Prov. X). G. M., were appointed delegates to. the Friendly Societies Benevolent Association.

Several accounts -were passed for payment. ■ ■ The monthly meeting of <No. 22 Star of Sydenham Loyal Orange Lodge was. held in the Orange Hall on Tuesday evening. The W.M.,. Bro D. Gunn, presided. A largo quantity of correspondence was dealt with.

Hampton and P. decided to go into mourning for sis: months on account of the death of Bro W. H. Coulter. Three candidates were initiated into

the Order, and four were proposed for membership. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the visitors, all of whom suitably re-

sponded. The Lodge then adjourned to thp refectory,, where a pleasant hour was spent in harmony. The meeting was brought to a close by tibs singing of " God Save the Queen." The Kaiapoi Young People's No-license Guild held a meeting on Wednesday. A Varied programme of music and recitations "was gone, through, and speeches were made by the Rey H.
