WORK AND WAGES.

THREATENED STRIKE OP MINERS.

United Pres 9 Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 21. A deputation of miners told the Premier that unless the Government took action, a general strike in the coal trade was close at hand. A meeting of miners representative of the .various coal-mining districts decided to take concerted action to obtain an increase in the selling price of coal. In the event of the coal-owners declining to meet the men at a conference on the matter, they will take other steps. A deputation from the meeting interviewed the Premier, and urged the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire into the whole question of the coal trade, and also eight hours for miners and compulsory arbitration. A statement was made that unless the Government took action, a general strike was close at hand. Mr Lyne said that before taking the extreme step of appointing a Commission, lie would see if some arrangement could not be arrived at. Compulsory arbitration would be one of the first measures introduced next session. In reply to a suggestion that the Government should start a State coal mine, he said that the idea was difficult to carry out, but the Government-would go a great way to prevent a strike.
