Tbo new steamship •Gymeric, which has been iensased to take the Fifth Contingent to South '(Africa, arrived from Wellington yesterday 'afternoon. She was boarded at tho Heads by Upham, health officer, and after his cxamiination, which resulted satisfactorily, was brought into the inner harbour and berthed at [N'o 5 wharf. She is to take on board a quantity! of' produce for South Africa, and to leave for Dunedin this evening. Tho Gymerio is a 'steel screw steamer of 4002 tons gross and 2598 tons not register. She is 345 ft long, 49ft 'Bin in beam, and 17ft 9in in depth of hold, 'and is fitted with triple expansion engines of '25 41 and 67 inches diameter of cylinders, and '43 inches length of stroke, and a nominal (horse-power of 564. She was .built at -Port Glasgow by Bussell and Co. last year, and is ‘owned by- tho Gymerio Company, Limited, of Glasgow, and commanded by Captain Thom- " ' son . A large gang of carpenters, under the direction of Mr Kennedy, of the Enion Steamship Company, is busily engaged m fitting up the vessel for the contingent, and has made good progress with the' work. Lyttelton at 5.50 a.m. yesterday, and is expected to arrive this morning. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's s.s. Maori, Captain Moffatt, arrived from London via Plymouth, Teneriffe, Capetown and Wellington, at 9 a.m. yesterday. She left ;Plymouth on Feb. 22, passed Teneriffe on Feb. 28, reached Capetown on March 13, and left the same day, arrived at Hobart at 9 a.m. on March 6, and, after discharging 250 tons of cargo, left at 6.30 p m. for Wellington, which she reached on March 11. The voyage was fine and uneventful (throughout. 'The run from iSobart to Wellington occupied four days fifteen hours. There is no change in 'the personnel of her deck officers, and only one iri the engineering department, Mr Harvey being -now chief refrigerating engineer, in place of Mr Raybourne, ■ who has been transferred to the Rangatira.
