ENTERTAINMENTS.

The monthly “social” of the Yorkshire Society of Canterbury was held at the Caledonian Rooms last, night. There was a large attendance, and Mr Walter Hill was in the chair. Selections Wei's played by Robinson’s Band, and songs were sung by Miss Robinson and Mr Halley, and a duet by Messrs Knott and Rodda. Mr G. Swann gave an historical lecture on the City of York,- which was illustrated with lantern views, and Miss Wilson gave an illustrated recitation. The entertainment was followed by a tlimce. The Salvation Army Federal Ban-d performed at the Drill Hall, Eangiora, last evening, before a v ery large audience. This morning the band will give a street performance in aid of the local Benovolent So-

ciety’s funds. There was a, large audience at St Matthew’s Schoolroom" last evening, when a “ social ” was given under the auspices of the St Albans Church of England Temperance Society. The Rev H. Williams occupied the . chair. Bishop Julius gave an address, in _ which he referred to the rise and growth of the Society in the Mother Country, its aims, and the good work which it was doing. The Revs HiWilliams and H. C. M. Watson also spoke. During the evening songs were rendered by Misses Swindell and Forward and Mr Du Feu, and recitations by Miss Butterfield. Several hymns were also sung by the audience. , '

On Monday the Steel-Payne Family gave a concert in the Kaiapoi Oddfellows’ Hall. The ladies of Kirwee gave an'enjoyable dance in the Kirwee Hall on Friday, and about forty couples were present.
