On Thursday the opening meeting of the Fernside Mutual Improvement Society was held; Miss Annie Kelcher being in the chair. -■ir. Dr Envin ,being in the chair, The Secretary reported on the engagement • of a Chinese catechist, and the matter was, left in the hands of the executive. Arrangements were completed for the halfyearly convention; reports were given by ■ the Lookout. Committee and the Magazine Secretary, and a paper was read by Mrs Jenkin on “ The Work of the Sunshine Committee.” _.. ~ At the West Eyretnn Town Hall, the first of a series of Band of Hope meetings was held on Friday. .There was a good, attendance, and the Rev B. H. , : Ginger presided. . The programme was an interesting one, and was evidently appreciated. Qn Friday evening there was excellent, attendance at the Gust Friendship .Guild, • when the Rev F, Stubbs presided. The programme consisted of a -nunlber. of articles contributed .to the magazine, on one of which, .dealing with the subject of, buying jn. the cheapest and selling in the dearest market, a very spirited ‘discussion--took -place. The Chairman, .Messrs G, H.. White, C. B. Forbes, J. Forbes and A. D. Hassall were the principal speakers.
