WELLINGTON NEWS.
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 23. The movement to form a Council of the Evangelical churches of the colony has proceeded so far that at a meeting called for the purpose, the following resolutions were carried:—‘That a Council be formed, its name to be * The New Zealand Council j)f Evangelical Churches, Wellington Branch,’ the churches constituting such Council to be the Baptist, Congregatonal, Presbyterian, Primitive Methodist, Wesleyan Methodist, and such other evangelical churches as the Council shall at any time admit; the objects of the National Council shall be to facilitate fraternal intercourse and co-operation among the evangelical churches, to assist in the organisation of local Councils, to encourage devotional, fellowship and mutual counsel concerning the spiritual life and religious activities of the churches, to advocate New Testament doctrine; and defend the rights of the associated churches; to promote the application of the law of Christ in every relation of human life.” The Board of Education will, at its next meeting, deal with a report which the. Chief Inspector (Mr R. Lee) is preparing on the question of the desirableness of abolishing examination in certain classes by the Inspectors in the larger and more efficientschools. Mr Lee is of opinion, and in this view, he is supported by the Chairman of the Board, that the more qualified head teachers should be allowed ’to classify their children, so that the Inspectors’ sole duty would be to make a general inspection of those schools in order to satisfy themselves as to the general efficiency of the classes. The adoption of such a system would, it is thought, enable the inspectors to devote more time to the smaller schools; at the same time it would not be in any way detrimental to the larger and well-equipped schools, the teachers of which would, it is hoped, appreciate the larger discretion that would be given to them under the proposed scheme.
