FIRE BRIGADE STATION.
The discussion on the new Fire Brigade Station was renewed at the meeting, of the \ City Council last night, when.''the tenders for the work were laid on'the table. Councillor Samuels said he could bring the evidenced three doctors-to show that the proposed building would be unfit to live in on account of of thehorses. Councillor Gray moved that the tenders «shoald ; be opened. Councillor Samuels- mowed that the tenders should not be-opened, and that the Council should take the, opinions of three medical.gentlemen. on"tbe plans before opening the tenders: Oountaßor Sorensen seoonded-the amendmant-ott sanitaary;:grounds Councillor Gray said that Mr Barlow, the. architect, had'Stated allowed, all bad effects»could':b& .with/ by merely plastering, the .ceiling.. , Councillor Payfing said that 7the system already approved by the" Council was adopted almost universally' tbrflngbont America.' Mr Barlow, on losing caßed,. -stated that this was the.jjsse, and ihewhad never read of a nuisance occurring in America. Plastering would übsohitel.y-*pre-vent any smell from coming up. Councillor Woods reverted to his London andr'oolonial experiences, and-said that to his' knowledge no evil had ever, occurred. cilior Andrews, Mr Barlow, said that the living rooms were not directly abowe the stable. Councillor Andrews pointed out that in the-Chester Street Station-the horses were underneath the living .rooms-, and there had been no complaint from there. Councillor Sandstein'said that to have a, perfect up-to-date system, the men, horses and engines must be close together. He had inspected several of the American, fire stations. Councillor Loughnan said he' opposed the opening of the>.tenders on the ground that at present the-Council., had no money 10 spend. It could only draw a cheque, and increase its overdraft. ,He then dealt fully with thedegaL aspect of the matter. Councillor J. T. Smith said that what the Council intended was to replace a rotten building with a new one upon another site. Councillor Appleby sujjjgesjjed that "the Council should sell the-oIA-site,.;Re-quire the new one responsibility. , Councillor Sandstein objected that this matter /was' ; hot before • the Council. Councillor Morris • supported the opening of the tenders, and said that the regulations only prevented the city' from having a greater overdraft than revenue in any one year. The. motion was carried, and the tenders were opened. Twelve tenders were received, varying in amount from £2692 to £2191. The latter tender, that of Mr W. J. Moore, was accepted, and the { Mayor was authorised to sign theicoptracfe on behalf of the Council. Councillor Appleby moved that the Lichfield Street site should be. let, and that the Reserves Committee should be appointed to draw up the i form of lease. Councillor Sandstein seconded the motion, which.was carried.
