ELECTRIC LIGHTING.
A LEGAL POINT. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 19. At a meeting of the City Council, the Mayor called attention to the fact that a private firm intended to light business premises in Queen Street, from Wellesley Street to Wakefield Street, with electric light. He said that this was not legal, and was a contravention of the Electric Lines Act, A person could not take an'electric current beyond the building in which it was generated. If the Council intended to apply to Parliament for power to let a contract for the* lighting of the city, it was not right that the eyes should be picked out of the city. The Mayor said that whejl the Premier was in Auckland a deputation waited on him in r«-.V rent;?, to the matter. He presumed that Council intended to follow this metier in-, :> v ;d ..k ! Piii*lameut fur power to let >he electric lighting of the city be taken up by contract. On the Mayor’s motion, the question was referred to the Legal Committee for the purpose of inquiry.
