COUNTY COUNCIL.

ASHBURTON. A meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held on Friday. Mr* E. G. Wright, M.H.E.,presided., The Engineer’s report stated that the works for the irrigation scheme in > the Ruapuna district were in progress, and dealt with work necessary at Pudding Hill for the water supply. The ; Council decided. to contribute £sotowards the cost of concrete culverts over the Wakanui Creek, put down by the Wakanui Eoad Board, and to erect sheep bridges over the races at Fairfield. It was also decided to contribute £2l per annum to the Ashburton Borough, Council, on behalf of Hampstead, Tinwald, and Allenton, provided the Borough’s fire engine and brigade, when possible, would attend fixes in these places. The Engineer was instructed to report on the cost of substituting an embankment ,600 ft long on the Ashburton bridge at its southern end. Messrs Williamson, Lambie and Chapman were appointed to inquire into the condition of Markey’s Bridge, on the Great South Eoad. The Council declined to interfere with the water system on the Highbank Settlement, if it were to cost any money, as the arrangement of the races had been agreed on at the outset with the Land Board. Several notices of motion having been given, and accounts passed, the Council rose. ■
