[Per Press Association.] NAPIER, May 5. The “ Referee ” recently refused to publish the name of a Hawke’s Bay horse owner in the unpaid forfeit list unless the Jockey Club would indemnify it against damages for libel, the owner having given notice that he would commence an action if the name appeared. The Jockey Club passed a resolution to-day. giving the required indemnity, but informing the “ Referee ” that its action would necessitate the Racing Conference considering the status of the “ Referee ” as the official organ for advertising races.
Joseph O’Connell, a police constable, was to-day charged with stealing £B, the property of Samuel Beswick. The prosecutor alleged that the money was taken” on the voyage of the Waihora from Gisborne to Napier, when accused was on board in charge of two prisoners. After the hearing of part of the evidence he was remanded to next Thursday. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association has put the dates of the show back to Oct. 12 and 13. It was decided not to support the suggestion of the Manawatn Society that the Government should bo asked to place £IOOO on the estimates for gold medals for distribution among the agricultural societies in the colony.
