THE NEW FIRE BRIGADE STATION.
DISCUSSION BY THE CITY COUNCIL, The Eire BrigadeCominittee having- considered the plans and specifications for the How fir© bngar! a , station, rGConunGiwiGQ. ■ the Council. in a report presented last Jught, to call for tenders for the work. Councillor Samuels objected to a sixstall stable being placed under the same roof under which people lived. Superintendent E. Smith, on being called, said, in reply to Councillor Lough-, nan, that he approved of the plan asshown. In reply to the Mayor, Superintendent Smith said, that in.the most recent Home buildings i the horses were stalled alongside the plant. Of course, .the stalls would, require-constant cleaning. Councillor Gray said that no bedroom, existed over the stable. Superintendent Smith, in reply to Counoillor Loughnan, said that the horses would be brought from their stalls to the engine “without going outside. A detached shed for straw and chaff would be advisable. Atpresent the small room shown on the plan was the ■ only receptacle for feed. Ten single and two married men would live at the station. V : Afler considerable discussion Councillor . Longman moved, and Councillor Sorensen seconded—“ That the plans he referred back to the committee to see if both frontages conld not he used for purposes of exit, and other improvements.” Councillor Gray said it was /open to Councillors to pass the report andl leave it to the Eire Brigade Committee l to effect ■such minor improvements as had been suggested. - The amendment on being put was lost on the voices. Councillor Sorensen proposed—“ That the question of building a fire brigade station on the central yard or the new site be referred to the public, together with other details of the loan.” The Mayor said that the question of a loan or no loan rested with the ratepayers, ■but the location of a building was a matter '.for the Council. If the Council decided wrongly its members were amenable to the ratepayers. ’ Councillor Sorensen then moved—“ That ‘ 'the building be not proceeded with until the ratepayers have passed the loan.” . 'The Mayor ruled that the Council had already decided upon building. He . would, however, take a notice of motion. Councillor Sorenson then put his amendment in the form of a notice of motion. Councillor Loughnan's amendment, on being submitted to the meeting, was lost. The original motion, on being put, with the understanding that the suggested im.provements should be effected, was carried, ■ ; Councillors Samuels, Stapleton, Loughnan,. Kincaid and Sorensen voting against it.
