PRISON WARDERS.

[Peb Pbess Association.! WELLINGTON, Jan. 5. The Minister of Justice has, on tlie recommendation of Colonel Hume, Inspector of Prisons, sanctioned a new scale of pay for prison warders, to take effect from Jan. 1, on an increment system dependent on length'of service, coupled with good , conduct and efficiency. The new scale abolishes the rank of assistant warder, and pla-ces new hands joining the prison service in future on prolflltion for six months. This probation will be served at. one of the larger prisons under an experienced officer, who will be specially told off to instruct probationers in their various duties, prior to their receiving permanent, appointments. The distinction between first and second class prisons has been abolished.
