DOMAIN BOARD.

A meeting of the Christchurch Domain Board was held yesterday ; present —Mr W. Jacques (chairman), Hon C. C. Bowen, Messrs R. J. S. Hannan and H. P. MurrayAynsley. The Head Gardener reported that the present season had been comparatively favourable, although a good rainfall was now much needed. The growth of trees, shrubs, and vegetation generally had been luxuriant, and an unusual wealth of flowers had bloomed. The staff had worked hard to advance the condition and appearance of the Domain, but the work was always ahead at the present time of year. There were a great many repairs and improvements required both in the park and in the gardens. On the motion of Mr Hannas, it was resolved that the Chairman and the mover should be ■ a sub-committee to consider the application of the Midland Cricket Club for the removal of the pines on the western boundary of the Hagley Park Cricket Ground, .with power to act.

The Chairman said that the Boards deficit at the end of the year would amount to about £l5O. To meet the liabilities and carry out the work thoroughly the Board should have about £2OO in hand. Among other things the bridges required repairing. . A vote of £IOOO had been passed in the last Parliamentary Estimates for subsidies to Domain Boards. Of this sum Auckland-and Wellington got £9OO. The Board might get a share of the balance of £IOO. It might also approach the City Council and the neighbouring local bodies for assistance. , Steps might be taken to hold an autumn floral fete in the Domain with the view of obtaining funds, or the public might be appealed to directly.

After some discussion it was resolved that the local bodies represented on the Board, namely, the Sydenham Borough Council, St Albans Borough Council and Selwyn County Council should be requested to give the Board assistance in its present position. Accounts amounting to £175 11s lOd-wera passed for payment. It was arranged that the members of the Board should meet,on Jan. 19, at 2.30 p.m., •at the Hospital comer for the purpose of inspecting the Domain trees, in view of the annual thinning. The meeting then closed.
