CURRENT NOTICES.
The fete in aid of the funds of St Mary’s Church, Merivaie, will open at the Art Gallery at 3 p.m. to-day, and will be continued to-morrow. A very large assortment of goods, including curios from Japan, will be for sale on the various stalls. Each evening there will be a concert programme, in which Miss Scrivenor’s string band will assist, and a comedietta will also be given. An entertainment will be given in the Social Hall of the Students of Truth this evening, in which there will be vocal and instrumental items, a Moorish dance, and the farce “Irish Justice.”
The Christchurch Cycling Club’s committee will meet at the rooms, Cashel Street, at eight o’clock this evening. The annual meeting of the Girls’ Friendly Society will be held at the rooms, Gloucester Street, at 2.30 p.m. to-day, when the Bishop of Christchurch will occupy the chair.
The excursion of the St Albans district school will be held at the Kaiapoi Domain on Thursday. The programme for the St Andrew’s Society Caledonian sports, which will take place at Kaiapoi on Boxing Day, is advertised in this issue.
A sale of work, including a number of blouses and aprons, will be held in St John’s Schoolroom, Latimer Square, at 7.30 to-morrow evening. The Lyttelton Choral Society will perform Cowen’s cantata, " Sb John’s Eve,” in the Colonists’ Hall, at eight this evening.
A sale of v/ork in aid of the funds of St Stephen’s Church will he held in the Druids’ Hall, Lincoln, on Friday afternoon.
Nominations for the election of a Councillor for the Borough of Eaiapoi, in place of Councillor E. Feld.wick, who has been elected to the Mayoralty, will close on Dec. 14. The Stanmore Brass Band, under Mr E. T. Searell, will perform a programme of music in Latimer Square at eight o’clock on Thursday evening, when a collection will he made in aid of. the fund for sending the band to take part in the contest to he held in Dunedin shortly. The kinematograph depicting scenes in connection with the late war between America and Spain will be shown at the Theatre Eoyal to-morrow evening. The accompanying lecture will be delivered by Mr W. W. Collins, and a musical programme will be provided. “ Some Heroes of the American Slavery Abolition Movement ” is the, title of a; lecture to be given in the Oddfellows’ Hall this evening by the Rev F. -W. Isitt. Mr T. E. Taylor, M.H.E., will preside. The lecture is described as being both instructive and amusing. The .Christ’s College Eifles will give a military concert and display at the Theatre Eoyal on Wednesday, Dec. 14, under the patronage of Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon and. the officers of the North Canterbury district. The assistance of the leading local amateur vocalists has been promised, and there' will also be military displays, tableaux and dances. The entertainment is in aid of the expenses of sending teams to compete at the military tournaments to , be held at Auckland and Dunedin. A combined practice of the chorus and orchestra of the Motetc Society will be held to-night in the rooms of the Young Men’s Christian Association. A new. express service between Little Eiver and Akavoa has been instituted. Passengers may now travel by conveyance from Little Eiver to Barry’s Bay, and thence by steam launch across the harbour to Akaroa. The service will be run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
