WORK AND WAGES.
LABOUR BILLS. AN APPEAL TO THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Oct. 29. The Chamber of Commerce has forwarded to the Hon B. Oliver, as chairman of the Labour Bills Committee, a resolution calling on the Council, at the solicitation of the manufacturers of DiVnedin, to condemn the principle underlying the proposed amendments to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, which constitute an iniquitous usurpation of the liberty of individuals, and are inimical to the best interests of industrial peace. It earnestly hopes that the Council will not pass the Master and Apprentice Bill in its present form, especially, as to compulsory indentures. It trusts that the Council will also uphold the principle of mutual agreement in the Workers Compensation Bill, as the manufacturers assert that these Bills, if passed, will lead to extensive importations and the closing up of industries.
A special meeting of the Canterbury Grocers Assistants’ Union is called for tonight, at 8 p.m., in Inglis’s Buildings, when every member is requested to attend, as the log of wages and hours of working -will be arranged. All new members are invited to attend.
