ABATTOIRS.

TO THE EDITOR. 'Sir,—Now that the Selwyn. County Council have decided not to.i erect abattoirs* it is to be hoped that the City Council will take the matter up in real ■ earnest. The Selwyn County Council have been the means of delaying-this important and much-needed work, as there is no doubt, if, they had left the matter with the City Council, < the work would have been well on the way. now. It does seem strange that Dunedin and other places should find ways and means of erecting abattoirs, and yet it seems such a perplexing problem for our Council. If the City Council will only communicate with the Dunedin Council, I have no doubt but they will be very pleased to tell them how to set about the work.—l am, etc., H.S. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The public will have observed that the Selwyn County Council has abandoned all intention of establishing abattoirs. This leaves the City Council to do the work, and I think it will be conceded that that is the proper body to take up the matter. The apathy of the public in pressing on the erection of these necessary works must surprise everyone who takes an interest in the matter. The figures quoted by the Chairman of the Selwyn County Council, showing the number of animals condemned within the short space of six months, shows how 'necessary it is, in the interest of the public health, that a public slaughtering place should be established with the least possible delay. The success of the Dunedin City Corporation in the establishment of abattoirs should act as a strong incentive to our Corporation to go and do likewise, let alone the fact that such works are likely to prove remunerative in the near future. In the interests of the butchers, also, whose license expires at the end of the year, it is unfair to leave them in a state of suspense as to what is to happen. Let me urge the CityCouncil to lose no time in taking the business in hand. —I am, etc., A. R.
