THE FROZEN MEAT INDUSTRY.

It waa a very happy idaa of thaimanagement of toe Christchurch Meat Company to fill in the dav between the racing at Sicearton with a public inspection of itt extensive works at Islington. There is probably, no other day in the year on which aoi many people interested in the frozen meat trade could be found ii Christ* church, and there is certainly no otheij, company in the colony that could offer so much for their entertainments and instruction. The fact that 700 , or 800 gentlemen seized the opportunity to inspect the work* • shows that the courtesy of the management was appreciated, and that there is a widespread interest 1 ' in its various undertakings. One of the good results of the gatiiermg wilT; - be to firmly establish the faith of "the visitors in the merits of frcrten meat*" ‘ No one can have complete! the tone of inspection at Islington yesterday* without being convinced that the meat the company is sending to London is at leftst equal to the very' primest joints that are displs yed in ourj local butchers’ shops. Every thing that money and skill and care can dp t<> ensure the best results has been done*' and the only problem solved seems .to be the difficult one of obtaining an adequate price for the meat in London. This is now to be faced in a thoroughly practical Nothing could offer a better prospect" of success than the opening of retail shops at Home for the exclusive sale of New Zealand meat, and the latest - enterprise of the company will' . have the cordial good, wishes of every patriotic colonist. "We quite agree with the Manager 1 that a larger sum than £250 should , be voted by Parliament for the purpose of advertising t New Zealand , mutton in Great Britain, and we trust that when framing his estimates tho Treasurer will very considerably increase the amount, The Agent-*. General and the produce eiperto, have insisted all along that the only way to reach the great mps of tbe . consumers is by persistent and liberal advertising. It would be impossible , for a private company to conduct this part of the business so well as the Agent-General could, and a Government that has already done so much for the farmers of the country should not hesitate to spend a few thousand pounds in developing an industry in which they are specially interested. There are few directions in which, public money could bo expended with more general approval and with . greater advantage to every section of community.
