The Eastern Extension Telegraph Company has declined to consider a proposal for the reduction of the rates charged on cable messages between Europe and Australia until the Australian Governments have decided whether they will support the proposed] Cape cable. The Indian newspapers express gratification at the appointment of Mr Curzon as Governor-General.
New Zealand four per cent stock is quoted at £ll4 15s, three and a half per cent at £lO7, and three per cent at £99 ss. The English wheat market is quiet and steady. The Continental market is changing a little for the better, and the American is firm. At the invitation of the Christchurch Meat Freezing Company seven hundred persons visited the Islington works yesterday, and were entertained at luncheon. Sir E. C. N. Braddon, Premier of Tasmania, has written to the Premiers of the other Australian colonies urging them to provide funds to annually send a team of riflemen to Bisley. Two hundred and thirty bales of wool were salved from the wreck of the Matanra in good condition. General Miles, the American commander, has been instructed to cease hostilities, peace with Spain being assured. The Spaniards will be allowed to leave Puerto Rico and Cuba with arms, equipments and all the honours of war. Russia has obtained a. coaling station on the African coast of the Red Sea. It is stated that France will contribute three millions, and Belgium two millions, towards the construction of the PekinHankow line, and that the contract includes a secret clause providing for the extension of the railway to Canton. In accordance with resolutions recently passed, the Marylebone Cricket Club has decided to invite the six counties leading at the end of the season’s championship contests, to each nominate a representative for a Board to be appointed tor the management of test matches between England and Australia in 1899.
Earl De La Warr, Martin D. Rucker (Mr Hooley’s partner), a man named Broadley (who Mr Hooley stated had received £IO,OOO from him for managing the Press), and another named Bradshaw, are being charged with contempt for endeavouring to induce Mr Hooley to alter his evidence with regard to his bankruptcy.
