THE EMPEROR’S sympathy. BISMARCK’S EPITAPH. United. Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. BERLIN, August 2. The Emperor telegraphed to Count Herbert Bismarck, “ I mourn the loss of Germany’s great son, whose faithful co-operation in the work of reuniting the Fatherland won the lifelong friendship of my grandfather, and the eternal gratitude of the entire German nation. I shall prepare a place for his remains in the cathedral in Berlin beside my ancestors.” Count Herbert replied that the Emperor’s wishes were commands, but that Prince Bismarck had desired to he buried at Sachsenwabe. The funeral rites will probably be of the simplest character. Prince Bismarck left a written epitaph to be placed on a memorial stone over his grave. The words are ; —“ A faithful German servant of the Emperor William the First.” On Tuesday and Wednesday Prince Bismarck drank beer and champagne, smoked and read the newspapers. When urged to go to bed at 11.30 p.m. on Thursday he growled at being hurried off. He leaves a fortune of twelve million marks. August 3. Count Herbert Bismarck received the Emperor and Empress at Friedrichsrnhe and conducted them to the bed chamber, where a short service was held- The coffin was serened down overnight. Count Herbert refused to allow his father’s face to be modelled, though the Emperor sent a modeller for the purpose. _ A State memorial service will be held to-morrow.
