DOMAIN BOARD.

QUARTERLY MEETING. The - quarterly meeting of the Christchurch Domain Board was held at the City Council Chambers yesterday; present —Mr W. Jacques (chairman), Mr Waymouth (Mayor of St Albans), the Mayor of Christchurch, Messrs R. J. S. Harman and H. P. Murray-Aynsley. and the Hon C. C. Bowen. An apology for absence was received from Mr j. Forrester, Mayor of Sydenham. The head gardener, Mr Taylor, reported that he had looked into the effects of the late fires in the domain, and had cut down all the trees that were beyond recovery. The plants, trees and shrubs; had not suffered appreciably by t,he effects of tho pro-longed-drought, and were in a flourishing condition,.but a shower of-rain would do an iniinenso amount of good. The strong grinds had broken a number of branches off the tresis. Ho complained of the practice of people flowers in the gardens, and thought the matter should be put a stop to. The report was adopted.A letter was received from'the Christchurch Fire Brigade, thanking the Board for its donation of .£2 2s for assistance rendered at the fire in the Domain, and stating that it was not thought advisable to send the plant to the second fire on account of the high wind blowing and the risk involved if a fire should occur in the town. In regard to a person grazing cows in the Park, it was decided that the practice should be prohibited, as the cattle barked a number of trees on the side of the river. A letter was received from the purchaser of the cocksfoot seed in the Domain, asking for compensation for the loss of the seed by the late fire. He had paid £3 as a deposit,, and urged the Board to pay the balance. The request was granted. • A boat proprietor wrote asking that ,the Board, would allow him to place boats for hire on tho Victoria Lake. It .was resolved that the request should not be •, complied with, and. no person should be allowed to place a boat on tlie lake. , • •, . Mr Archer, city surveyor, waited on the Board and requested that the. City Council should ho allowed to place a board on the banks of the lake asking people not to throw rubbish into the water. Mr Taylor stated thata gang of hoodlums who frequented the gardens made it their practice to gamble and to destroy the shrubs, and seats. The offenders had often been warned, but still continued their practice. Ho thought it was high time that the police were communicated with. ' Accounts to the amount of .£122 Ss were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
