CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, April 18. (Before Mr J. Forrester, J.P.; Mr. J. Gapes, J.P.; and Mr E. Green, J.P.) Drunkenness. charged with a second ofl'oncs within six months, and was fined 10s, with the alternative of seven days’ imprisonment. —A first offender was ss. I Before Mr E. Beetham, S.M.] Desertion. —James Tullett, who had been arrested on a warrant at Oamaru and brought to Christchurch, was charged with deserting his wife, Fanny Tullett, and his six children under the age of fourteen years at Christchurch, and leaving them without adequate means of support. Mr Joynt appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Stringer for the defendant. Mr Joynt asked for a remand till April 26, and intimated his intention of asking for a further remand to Waimato. In asking for bail, Mr Stringer said that the sum of £4GO had been found in defendant’s possession, and ho asked that .£2OO of this should bo taken as security in place of the usual securities. Mr Beetham said ho had no power to make an order on money which the police may have found on any prisoner. lie would fix bail in one surety of illoo, and two of £l5O each, and the counsel could come to their own arrangement. Civil Cases. —Judgment was given for plaintiffs by default in the following cases: —Ellen Cockayne v. Walter Campbell, claim £3 10s (id; D. W. Bertram v. Mrs H. Eaynor, £1 7s ; and A. Reynolds v. F. Stevenson, 10s. Beswick and Harris v. E. C. J. Stevens (attorney for A. B. I'lapier), claim £4 Is. Mr Cowlishaw appeared for the defendant, and Mr Beswick for the plaintiffs, for whom judgment was given, with costs ill 12s. KAIAPOI. Monday, April 18. (Before Mr J. L. Wilson, J.P. and Mr C. Hansen, J.P.) Breaches op By-Laws. Frederick Merriu was fined 5s and costs for driving a vehicle without lights.—Henry Edward King, for a similar offence, was fined 5s and° costs, and W. Mendolson os and costs, —For riding a bicycle without a light, William Dalzell was fined 5s and costs.—Arthur Fair weather, for driving a vehicle without lights, was fined 5s and costs.—Patrick Slpano, for neglecting to grub gorso off road fronting Section 3765, was fined .£1. —A case of driving without lights, against William Stark, was adjourned till Monday next. Civil Cases,— Sims v. M. Den, roe, claim ill 12s oci, judgment for plaintiff by default.—Estate of W. Fraser v. Mrs M. J. King, claim £4 Is Bd, adjourned till April 25. —M. K. Daniels v. W. Pascoe, .£l2 Os sd, judgment summons. Order made for payment of 2s por week, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment.

SOUTHBRID G B. Friday, Arril 15. (Before Mr E„ Beetham, S.M., Mr J. Rv Campbell, J.P. and Dr Gosset, J.P.) Civil Cass. —Harnej v. Hannaford; Mr Bussell for plaintiff and Mr Izard for defendant. Decision was given in this case, which was concerning tho right to impound off private roads, and which had been reserved from the previous sitting of the Southbridge Court. Mr Beetham held that a road must be under the~coutrol of the local authorities. In this case it was not so, and he gave judgment for the amount claimed, with costs.
