' [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, April 18. An important decision has been given by Judge Kenny, in the Valuation Court. The question was, whether an hotel license should be taken into account in ascertaining the capital value of property under the Government valuation. A large number of counsel appeared to argue against it, and Mr Kenny upheld their contention and ordered the valuation to be made simply on the land and buildings apart from the license. The application of two Natives for a further inquiry into the late Major Kemp’s position as owner of Horowhenua Block 14 was adjourned in consequence of the chief’s death, till the order of succession had been made. The following is the result of the election for the Victoria College Council:— Parliamentary Roll: Rev Dr Watters, Dr Chappie and Mr Wilson, M.H.R. Education Board Roll: Messrs Blair, Seymour and Bauchope. Graduates’ Roll: Sir R. Stout, Bishop Wallis and Mr Eirth. Teachers’ Roll: Messrs Fleming and Watson and the Rev Evans. Excepting Messrs Seymour (Marlborough) and Bauchope (Tarauaki) all are Wellington residents. An accident happened to one of the drainage ejectors in Victoria Street yesterday, some of the joints blowing out. This morning it was found that the sewage had found its way into the cellars of Messrs Bing, Harris and Co.’s warehouse opposite, and” that considerable damage bad been done, amounting roughly to .£IOOO. Colonel Pole-Penton wired a message of sympathy to the relatives of Major Kemp, and regretting the death of so gallant a soldier and ally. At a meeting of the Patent Slip Company, Mr Pearce, chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, referred to the fact that the present was the first meeting at which the directors bad ever been able to recommend a dividend of 8 per cent. The directors, ho added, hoped, if all went well, to bo able to recommend at some future | meeting that the portion of the capital which was written olf when the Government subsidy ceased, four years ago, should bo returned to the shareholders.
