It is reported that the recognition by the Senate of a Cuban Eepublio was the outcome of a coalition to embarrass President M’Kinley. It is reported that Great Britain will treat coal shipped to the West Indies as contraband. Several German newspapers urge that the present is a favourable opportunity to ensure exclusive German sovereignty in Samoa. The construction of a water-way to connect the Black and Baltic Seas has been decided upon by the Eussian Government. In consequence of the strike of miners, the iron works in Scotland are in want of coal supplies. The Police Commission opened its sittings in Christchurch at the Provincial Council Chambers yesterday. The morning was occupied with the evidence of Mr Inspector Broham. It was announced that complaints against two constables would fco taken at 10 a.m. to-day. Yesterday afternoon the Commission inspected the force on parade, and the Christchurch and suburban stations. At Wellington yesterday, the Chief, Justice delivered judgment in the actions brought against the Greymouth-Point Elizabeth Coal Company, by relatives of the men killed in the Brunner disaster. In fifteen cases judgment was given for the plaintiffs for sums ranging from .650 to .■6925, and in one case judgment was given for the defendant company. At the meeting of the City Council last evening, a previous motion fixing the site of a public morgue was rescinded, and an attempt is to be made to get the use of the hospital morgue. The Council also decided in favour of public abattoirs.
