AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
The atitumn meeting of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club, held at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon, did not attract a large attendance, only a few hundred spectators being present. Perfect weather prevailed, and in the athletic events some first-class sport was witnessed, this being especially the case in the longer distances, in which exceptionally large fields took part. In these both S. Pentecost and A. H. Joseph ran excellently, but they wore unable to quite make up the handicaps. L. J. Vangioni accomplished a meritorious performance for a young athlete in winning the Long Jump by clearing 19ffc lin, and C. P. Cholmondeley was in fine fettle over the hurdles. He easily won his preliminary heats of the 120yds 3ft hurdles, and in the final, without being pushed from start to finish, and owing 15yds, registered ,17sec. The competitions for members of volunteer corps were eliminated from the programme, as no entries had been received. The cycling events, held under the rules of the New Zealand Cyclists’ Alliance, proved very uninteresting, owing to the fact that tho fields were small and the quality of the riders, with one or two exceptions, mediocre. The arrangements for tho meeting were well carried out and the various events were got off vrith commendable punctuality. The Woolston brass band played selections during the afternoon.
