THE EASTER CHURCH PARADE.
THE REFUSAL OF FREE PASSES. Great dissatisfaction was felt at the action of the Government in refusing free railway passes to enable the Lyttelton volunteers to attend the church parade ordered by the officer commanding the district for yesterday morning. On Friday Mr J. Joyce. M.H.R., sent the following telegram on the matter to the Minister of Defence: — “ The Hon T. Thompson, Defence Minister, Wellington.—Customary for Lyttelton Volunteers to unite with Christchurch corps at Easter Church Parades in Christchurch. Be good enough to authorise railway passes as was done last year. Please wire me Lyttelton to-night, otherwise volunteers cannot be notified in tomorrow’s newspapers.— John Joyce.” The Minister forwarded the following reply “ John Joyce, Esq., M.H.R., Lyttelton— Commander of the Forces does not approve, seeing that parade not for drill purposes. All available fundsfor passes required for intercorps meetings, for drill and shooting purposes. You have a good church in Lyttelton. What need to go from home? Best wishes.— T. Thompson.” This answer greatly intensified the feeling of dissatisfaction, and the Lyttelton Naval Artillery determined not to miss the parade, notwithstanding the refusal of passes, paid their own fares to and from Christchurch.
