OBITUARY.
EDWARD TRICE HOCGHTON,
Mr-E!-P. Houghton,’.for many im speefcor for the Union. Steamship Company of New Zealand," died' at ‘ Dunedin ,’ori Tuesday night. In the early days-'.qf thecolonisation qf. Now Zealand Mr Houghtdn was interested, in a firm of ‘ ship-o'jvuhrs which was running the coastal trade of New Zealand.' The firm of Houghton and Son started with a small steamer, the Planet, which traded to the Taieri River shortly after the opening of the goldfields at Gabriel’s Gully. This venture proving successful,’the Star of the South, Evening Star,.and . other vessels, were acquired ‘ by i-the 'firm. ,'Mr 'Houghton joined* the Union Company as inspector some- eighteen years ago, and held this position until the time of his death. Mr Houghton, who leaves a wife and family resident.in Dunedin, was ill for about a fortnight before his death. The flags of the various Shipping Companies in the city were flying at half-mast during yesterday.
