CAIRO, March 29.
Mahmud has asked the Khalifa to; give him fresh instructions prior to an. action against the British Anoyv He points out that the concentration of the British forces prevents any’ attack upon Berber by the Dervishes. 1 British gunboats have captured Shendy, a Dervish stronghold on-the Nile opposite Metemmeh. The Dervishes, to the number of seven hundred, assembled in front of Shendy. Three British gunboats shelled them,while the Egyptianforces outflanked the enemy, who fled. They; were pursued for twenty miles and 160 were killed. The forts were des-j troyed, and large quantities of grain, ; stores and ammunition were capturedi Six hundred slaves also were liberated.

A Reuter’s message says that Mahmud is practically besieged, and his forces are in a state of starvation.
