A NARROW ESCAPE., TIMARH, Maech 29,

The Rev C. E. Beecroft (Wesleyan), who leaves for Auckland shortly, nearly closed his ministerial term here in a tragic manner yesterday, by swallowing a poisonous liniment in mistake for a cough mixture. A cycling visitor had left some liniment in a “cinnamon cure ” phial. To relieve hoarseness, Mr Beecroft swallowed some. He noticed that it had not the same taste as cinnamon cure, but did not think much of it. A few hours later be went to bed and became delirious. Medical aid was obtained, Drs Hogg and Bowe being in attendance for some hours. At one time it was feared that the reverend gentleman would not recover, but ho was much improved this morning. The cyclist obtained the liniment in a pfopeidy-labelled phial, but on sharing it with another put his half in tho cinnamon cure bottle, and on his departure left it behind.

An accident Occurred on Monday at Kaiapoi, at 11 o’clock, by which Mr Cornelius O’Sullivan broke one of his legs. He was driving in a dogcart, in company -with a lady and another gentleman. When going over White’s Bridge a dog ran between tho horse’s legs, frightening the horse and sending it along at a smart pace. While turning the sharp corner at the end of the bridge one wheel sank into a hole in the side of the road, upsetting the cart and throwing the occupants out with some violence. Mr O’Sullivan retained his hold on the reins, with tho result that he was dragged for some distance, and the splashboard going over his leg broke it. The other occupants, who were unhurt, quickly got to the horse’s head. The injured man was brought to the Christchurch Hospital, and is progressing favourably.
