WORK AND WAGES.

BAKERS AND PASTRYCOOKS’ UNION,

A meeting of the Canterbury Bakers and Pastrycooks’ Union was held on Saturday evening, for the purpose of drawing up conditions of labour. It was decided that the following statement should he submitted to the master bakers, and that the Unigp should ask for its acceptance : —(1) Eight hours shall constitute a .day’s labour, including one hour for sponging. (2) No member shall start work before four- o’clock in the morning, except on Saturday, when he may start at three. After the Stated hours are up, time and a quarter up to five p.m., and time and a half after that time to be paid. (3) No apprentice or improver shall be allowed unless two bond fide journeymen be employed; if four men, two; but not more than two in any firm. (4) The rate of wages shall be not less than -83 for a foreman, -82 10s second hand, and other bands -82 os. (5) Sunday sponging shall cover all holidays; namely, New Year's Day, Anniversary Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Queen’s Birthday, Show Day, Labour Demonstration Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. If members are required to work on holidays they shall be paid at the rate of time and a half. (6) No carter shall work in the bakehouse, but a baker may deliver bread so long as be does not work more than the stipulated hours. (7) If a jobber be employed, he shall be paid 10s per day; if engaged by the week to be paid -82 10s. (8) Members of the Union shall he employed in preference to .non [members, if equally competent.
