KAURI GUM COMMISSION.

THE EEPOET. [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, March 21. The Kauri Gum Commission reports that up to last year the industry had yielded over eight millions of money, and contributed nothing to the revenue of the country, although the soil was destroyed and a large expenditure was necessitated on roads. Gorse could be grown for sheep feed, and the Commission suggests that diggers should not be allowed to burn off more than a square chain of fern and scrub at one time. The Austrians on the field are described as hardy, sober and industrious men, who, from their knowledge of vino and olive culture, would make good settlers if they stayed. Plenty of them earn from J 33 to ,£5 per week. The Commission recommends that no one except a settler be allowed to hold a gum digger's license till after twelve months’ residence in the colony. An export duty should be imposed of £3 to £5 per ton, and no holder of a publican’s license should be allowed to deal in gum.
