LAWN TENNIS.

The formal opening of the new courts of the Canterbury College Tennis Club was held on Saturday afternoon. Despite the boisterous weather there was a large attendance of members and tbeir friends. Mr J. P. Grossmann, the oldest member of the dub resident in Christchurch, declared the courts open, and referred in happy terms to the generosity of the Board of Governors, of ' which body one or two members were preseat. Afternoon tea was provided by the Club, and play was kept up till dark. The Cranmer Square courts of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Club were formally opened for the season on Saturday afternoon. The strong gale which was blowing prevented all but the more adventurous from playing. Several scratch matches were however played, and tea and cake were served, in the pavilion.
