A FINAL FORECAST.
TO THE EDITOE. Sie,—l have now the statistics of the world’s and this colony’s harvest before me. The world is deficient 200,000,000 bushels of wheat and 500,000,000 bushels of other breadstuffs; 700,000,000 bushels in all. Our wheat return will not average over twelve bushels to the acre —if it does that—leaving 3,300,000 bushels to be imported. From where ? You cannot import under 6s per bushel from any part of the world, whatever the grain ring may say. Wheat will be 5s to 7s per bushel; oats, 3s to 4s; potatoes, £5 to .£6; onions, .£lO to £l2; flour and oatmeal, £l4 per ton, by June 30 next. If war breaks out, of course they will be far higher.—l am, &c., WM. HARKER. [We our afraid our correspondent is not sufficiently careful in the use he makes of his statistics. Even if the wheat crop • should average only 12 bushels an acre, the 342,000 acres under that cereal would yield 4,104,000 bushels, while the total requirements of the colony, according to the liberal official estimate, amount to 4v1.60.000 bushels. This would leave a deficiency of only 350,000 bushels, which would probably be more than covered by the stocks in hand at the end of the year.—Ed. L.T.]
