SAMARITAN HOME.
TO the editor. Sir, —Mr H. B. Sorensen evidently does not read his Lyttelton Times, and, as you will be the first to admit, any man who neglects so important a duty must be hopelessly in the dark. If Mr Sorensen will refer to your issue of March 10. he will see that the Charitable Aid Board was not so disingenuous as he would have the public believe, for therein is published a list (up to that date) of the several opinions expressed by the local bodies who are required to provide the ratepayers’ contributions for support of legalised charitable institutions. And he will see, moreover, that those opinions are overwhelming against the proposal to establish the Samaritan Home under the provisions of the Act. Against voluntary efforts to do good, either by the promoters of the Home, or by Mrs Herrick, or the Salvation Army or any like benevolent organisations, there can of course be no argument. Mr Sorensen labours under a mistake which is shared by many others, namely, that the Christchurch City Council is “the most interested ”in this matter. The Counties of Selwyn, Ashley and Ashburton are each required to contribute larger sums to the Charitable Aid Board than the City Council is.—l am, &c..
THOS. C. NORRIS. Christchurch, March 25, 1898.
