CHEVIOT.
[From Cue Correspondent.] One of the most successful concerts ever held in the district was given on Tuesday evening, to a packed house, in the Town Hal!, in aid of the Mackenzie school treat. The most enjoyable items, which were redemanded, were those given by the school children. Great praise was due to the master, mistress and assistant-mistress for the able manner in which the children performed their parts. Items were also contributed by Miss Waddell, Mesdames Brassington, Stewart, . Messrs Burns, Hi col, Biischel and Gale. A recitation was given by Mr Balch, and Misses Waddel, Holton, Watson and M’Pherson played the accompaniments during the evening in an able manner. A dance, which was well patronised, followed the concert, and the music was supplied by Messrs Keig and Hullen. During the early part of the evening Mr Joseph Gibson called for a vote of thanks to the School Committee for their past services, and to the three teachers for their excellent training of the children. The vote was carried in a hearty manner. A meeting of the Show Committee of the Cheviot County Settlers Association was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, when Mr Joseph Gibson presided. The Minister of Lands wrote, wishing the show success, and saying that he would endeavour to be present. The New Zealand Farmers’ “Co-operative Association sent a cheque for £2 2s towards the prize fund, and Mr W. B. Clarkson sent £2 2s. Mr Prank Ward offered three children's prizes of 10s each for floral exhibits. The Department of Agriculture wrote that an expert would attend the show in May, and would deliver lectures and make tests. The Canterbury Frozen Meat and Dairy Produce Export Company offered one ton of manure as a prize. , Mr W. Kobinson, as agent for the Wakatu, offered two guineas towards the prize fund. Votes of thanks were accorded to the donors., Mr Kobinson stated that he. would give the Association the use of 200 hurdles for show day. It was decided to hold the show on the Mackenzie Recreation Grounds. An extra Canvassing Committee, consisting of Messrs Gee and Evans (Waiau Flat), Forbes and Hodgson (Leamington), B. Smith, Gill and G. Crampton (Domett), M’Laren (Caverhill) and S. Haughey (dairying exhibits), was formed. It was decided that subscribers of 10s 6d and upwards to the show should be admitted at half the schedule - rates (minimum rate to he 2s 6d), and obtain entrance to the grounds at 9 a.m.; honorary subscribers to pay full rates, with admission to the grounds at noon. Fifty guineas were allotted for prizes, and several special prizes were promised. The County Settlers Association will meet on April 2 for the annual election of officers. It is probable that the old committee will be re-elected unopposed.
