KIRWEE ATHLETIC CLUB.
The Kirwee Athletic Club held its annual sports meeting yesterday. On account of the threatening aspect of the weather in the morning, there was only a meagre attendance. The programme was carried out successfully until about a quarter to font in the afternoon, wben a heavy shower of rain interrupted the proceedings for half an hour. The Burnham Band played selections during intervals. Mr Batstone had the refreshment stall, and a side show, in the shape of a gramophone, amused the spectators. Mr S. E. Anderson was an efficient and hardworking secretary, and did all in his power to make the meeting a success. The officers were .—Patron, Sir John Hall; president, Mr J. Gough; vicepresidents, Kev H. G. Hawkins, and Messrs J. Barrett, G. O'Malley, W. H. Page, and T. S. Wason; committee, Messrs Anson, Barrett, Bourne, Davis, Dixon, Drummond, Harwood, Hutchison, M’Beath, Overton, Simms, Simpson, and Stewart; starter, Mr D. C. M’Beath; marksman, Mr S. Barrett; judges, Messrs Gough, O’Malley, and Page; clerk of course, Mr G. Anson; handicappers, the committee. The following are the results: — 106yds HANDICAP; first prize -20s,second 10s First heat: A, M'Beth, 6yds, 1; C. .Percy, 3yds, 2, Won easily. Second heat: J. Hayes, 4yds, 1; 8. Gibson, scr, 2, Third heat: F. Stewart, 3yds. 1• J Hayes, 4yds, 2, Hnmm also started. Final heat: J. Hayes, 4yds, 1; A. M'Beth, 6yds, 2. S. Gibson scr, F. Stewart 3yds, C. Berry 3yds and J. Hayes syds also started. Wimmef tev a splendid race by a few inches. HALF-MILE BICYCLE HANDICAP (one and a half laps); first prize 20s, second-XOs—First heat G. Watson, 25yds, 1; Thorne 15yds, 2; W. E. Porteous, scr, 3. C. Finlay syds,.J. Whall 25yds also started. Time—Xmin Second heat: W. Thomas, SOvds, 1; F. Gibson, scr, 2; Symonds, 10yds, 3. E. Watson 25yds, A. M'Beth 3yds also started. Won from the mark. Time—lmin 16see. Final heat; W. Thomas, 30yds, 1; Thorne, 15yds, 2 • G. Watson, 25yds, 3. W. E. Porteous scr, F. Gibson scr, and Symonds 10yds also started. Won on . the tape after an exciting race. Time—lmin 12nfip. RUNNING HIGH JUMP (post entries); first prize 20s, second 10s—E. Eains, s£t 7fm, 1; F. Gibson, sft 6|iu, 2; Prebble 3. M’Beth also competed. Bains’s jumping was remarkably good throughout, and seldom has been exceeded at any country gathering. 220yds HUSDLB HANDICAP; first prize 255, second 12s 6d—Prebble, 6yds, I; L. William, 2yds, 2- F. Stewart, syds, 3. F, Gibson scr, -C. Percy 6yds and B. Colthart Byds also started. Won by two yards. Time—SlJsec. BOYS’ EACE, 100yds ; prize: 6s—G. Thomas, 1; Langdale, 2; Batstone, 3. Won hrthree yards, one yard separating second and third. ONEJMILE BICYCLE HANDICAP (three laps); first prize 20s, second 10s—First.heat: W. B. Porteous, scr, 1; B. Thome, 30yds, 2; W. Thomas, 60yds, 3, Finlay 10yds and E. Watson 50yds also started. Porteous hung back for ths first two laps; but atthe third lap he succeeded in getting the lead, and maintaining his position to ths finish won by a yard, the same distance separating second and third. Time—2min 37lsec. Second heat: G. Watson, 50yda, 1- J. Whall, 50yds, 2; S, Gibson, scr, 3. Symonds 25yds also started, Watson led from the start, with Whall a length behind; Symonds finding the pace too fast, gave up at-the second lap. In the third lap, Watson gradually forged ahead, and won easily by five lengths. Time—2min 37sec. Final heat: G. Watson, 50yds, 1; W. B. Porteous, scr, 2; W. Thomas, 60yds. 3. F. Gibson scr, J. WhaU 50yds, and Thorne 30yds .also started. WhaU led'for the first lap, and mad© the pace very fast. Thome fell atthe end of the lap. Porteous took command for the second lap, and kept his position well until coming into the straight atihe end of the last lap, when AVatson, who had been holding back, put, on a sprint, and won. No time taken.
