W. H. E. Wanklyn. All that can be urged in favour of the weather experienced for the continuation of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting yesterday is that it was not quite so disagreeable as that on the opening day. A south-west wind, reminiscent almost of August, blew fiercely throughout tho afternoon, and made wraps and overcoats an absolute necessity. The attendance, which included his Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Ranfurly, was, under tho circumstances, large, and the sum of -213,033 was passed through the totalisator, or .£304 less than was handled on tho corresponding day of' the spring meeting last year The racing was really interesting. Certainly the race for the Derby was devoid of excitement, but the majority of the other events produced capital struggles. The arrangements wore practically the same as those on tho first day of the meeting, and as the attendance was naturally smaller, tho stands were not uncomfortably overcrowded.

Social Pest was installed favourite for tho Middleton Hurdle Race, with which racing was commenced. Mr Rutherford’s horse, however, appeared to ho suffering from his exertions iu tho Spring Hurdle Race, and his final effort to beat Misfire was distinctly | feeble. Kaiti struck the fence opposite | Cutts’s and unseated his rider, and Lobo | refused at the next obstacle, but it is doubtful if these mistakes affected the result of the race. Boreas, who was most in demand for the Criterion Handicap, was in front until a couple of hundred yards from home, when Uniform, who had evidently I benefited by his gallop in the Stewards’ Stakes, caught him, and won after a most j interesting struggle by a length and a half. Gold Medallist and Bloomer were withdrawn from tho Derby, leaving Multiform, Mountebank, Defiant and St Conon to go to the post. The last-named, who is a particularly handsome colt, was lame and in no fit state I for a trying contest. Defiant’s appearance lis typical of all the progeny of Dreadnought ; that is to say, he is a neat colt, possessing not much power and substance, but evidently useful. Mountebank, an overgrown, leggy son of Medallion and Vaultress, whose legs are disfigured by splints, is not an ideal Derby horse, but may improve with age. ; As far as appearance, was concerned, Multiform stood head and shoulders above his opponents. He has lengthened slightly since ho last ran at Eiccarton, and he is now an exceptionally blood-like horse, possessing all the attributes necessary to a successful career on the turf. When the starting barrier rose Defiant whipped round, and as pursuit of the other horses was hopeless he was taken back to the saddling paddock. This mishap was doubly unfortunate as the Hon J. D. Ormond’s colt constituted Multiform’s solitary formidable) opponent. In his absence the' race resolved itself into a procession. Multiform strode along in front at a sound pace; both his opponents were in hopeless difficulties some distance from the post, and he cantered home at his leisure three lengths in front of Mountebank. After his rider had weighed iu the winner was led on to the lawn and decorated with the Blue Ribbon by the Countess of Ranfurly. The natural outcome of Multiform’s easy victory was that Gold Medallist was made an exceedingly strong favourite for the Juvenile Stakes. Mr Stead’s colt appeared well, but he was beaten, after an interesting struggle, by Daunt. It is obvious, therefore, that he did not display his best form. The Metropolitan Handicap attracted a fine field, both numerically and individually. St Paul, who was made a rather better favourite than Waiuku, managed to reverse the positions occupied by the pair in the New Zealand Cup, and he won with a trifle to spare. Leda finished third, close behind Waiuku, but Day Star’s performance was no better than his display in the New Zealand Cup, and Skirmisher and Epaulet ran indifferently. The Selling Two-year-old Plate was won by Falka, a filly by St George from Melusina. The winner was subsequently submitted to auction without eliciting a bid, and consequently returned to her owner. Umslopogaas and Primula, who divided favouritism for the Epsom High-weight Handicap, both finished unplaced, and Starshot won without much to spare from Remorse 11., while the Auction Handicap was won by The Spinner. The following are details of the racing;—
